Horizontal Lifelines are a fall protection system that consist of a strong cable or rail anchored to a structure at two or more points, creating a horizontal line to which workers can securely attach their safety harnesses. This fall arrest system allows the workers to move freely along the line while being protected from falls.

Horizontal lifeline are typically used on elevated work surfaces like roofs, bridges, or industrial platforms where traditional anchor points may be limited or unavailable.

Components of a Lifeline system:

  • Anchor points: These are strong, durable fixtures embedded into a solid structure, providing a secure foundation for the entire system.
  • Lifeline Cable: This is the main component which   runs horizontally between anchorage points. Workers attach their safety harnesses to this cable.
  • Intermediate supports :  Supports that keep the lifeline cable properly tensioned and positioned, preventing sagging.
  • Shock absorber: A device integrated into the system to absorb the energy generated by a fall, reducing the impact on the worker and the system.
  • End Anchors: The components that secure the ends of the lifeline cable to the structure.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE): Workers attach themselves to the lifeline using a safety harness and a lanyard, ensuring a secure connection to the system.
